KA-IA was originally established by Karen Abernethy in Switzerland in 2009 and is now permanently based in Melbourne.

Our practice listens, perceives, and sensitively interprets the reqirements of each project and its site to create a wholistic approach that resonates with context and creates moments of joy.

We specialise in wellness studios, boutique commercial spaces (galleries and retail), and single residential projects including alterations and additions. Our projects are selected carefully and we keep our workload restricted to ensure a hands on approach allowing close collaboration with our clients and giving us time to profoundly understand and find solutions for their unique requirements.

We believe the establishment of a specialised team, including skilled consultants and craftspeople, is essential to the success of each project and ensures that all aspects of a project are resolved cohesively and elegantly within its entirety. Our aim is to create spaces that enhances people’s lives and wellbeing, deeply respects the environment, and contributes in a harmonious and meaningful way to our surroundings.
